#1947: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa Wholegrain La Mian

So Prima Taste has recently come out with wholegrain varieties. It was explained to me that wholegrain noodles can tend to be brittle or crumbly – so to prevent this, Prima has created a superfine powder. Indeed, the curry whole grain la mian was absolutely wonderful stuff! The noodles were perfect and had a kind of rustic, artisan kind of character to them. The point of wholegrain noodles is to promote a healthier alternative to white flour. Not only that, these are not fried noodles. Instant noodles are now starting to attempt to please the consumer with more healthy options. Pretty cool! I’m very curious how this laksa does! Let’s dig in and find out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, add the sachet contents to 500ml water and bring to a boil. Add in the noodle block and simmer for 7 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The first of two huge sachets: the laksa paste.

Has an elegant shrimp scent along with other spices.

The second sachet…

A very aromatic quantity of coconut powder.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Dodo fish ball and carved squid. These noodles are just amazing – they have a kind of rustic and artisan kind of heartiness to them. I get asked ‘if you had to pick one and you were going to be banished to a desert island’ – well, these are contenders. The broth is simply mind blowing with a wonderful rich laksa flavor – a nice amount of heat and layers of flavor. This is what it’s all about for me. This is perfection. I like it even better than the original. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8886350067854.

  1. I just don’t understand it. I really didn’t enjoy these!

They made my house smell like cat food for about 3 hours!

The broth really wasn’t enjoyable and had a funny aftertaste.

I will say that the noodles had a fantastic texture, but that’s the only praise I can give!

    1. It’s funny because so many people like it as I do, but maybe four or five over the years have said the same thing and mentioned it smells like cat fod! Well, bummer you didn’t enjoy it – but there’s a ton of other options out there you might like – what instant noodles have you had you enjoy? Maybe I can recommend something!

  2. These noodles are not like other instant ramen. Combined with some Prawns or chicken, and some fresh veggies they make a complete meal. The noodes are really nice to bite, the sauce is creamy and very aromatic. The taste could nearly be too strong for beginners, but i like it. It could be a little more spicy. The portion is really big , and so the high price is ok.

  3. I was so excited at first to be able to find this noodle in Canada after reading your review. It’s $3 Cdn / bag . Since it was an expensive bag of instant noodle, I followed the cooking instructions to a tee. Sorry, Han. I really wanted to like this noodle, but I just hated it. I had 1 sip of the soup and 2 bites of the noodles, and I had to dump the whole bowl down the drain. I found the noodle texture was strange, too spongy. The broth was the worst part. It had no depth of flavours. All I could taste was the excessive coconut milk with some dried shrimp flavour. The broth was simply too sweet and tasted fake .

    1. I’m not sure how anyone could get a deep impression of the broth with just one sip. The first sip is about first impressions only, where your expectations are met or shattered. Subsequent sips allow you to evaluate the broth more deeply, as your palate adjusts to the new flavors. It’s the same with music. I’m glad I didn’t get rid of some CDs I bought after the first listen, because they really grew on me on subsequent listens and now some of them are my favorites. This is how people should evaluate anything, really. First impressions can misleading, and some of the best tastes are acquired.

  4. Where can I get the whole grain one? The one linked to Amazon is the normal one, the ingredients don’t have any whole grain in it.
