Here’s one sent to me by Ippin, a purveyor of lots of different Japanese products. This is definitely a fancy variety from a set of Kanto region varieties based on popular ramen shops. Not a lot of boxes come across my desk so this should be interesting! Here’s what the Ippin website had to say about this variety:
Description: ・【Noodle】Curly thin noodles 【Soup】 Pork Bone Soup ・As one of the most famous ramen shops in Tokyo Kichijoji area, the soup is made out of pork bone, soy sauce, back fat, and garlic. Those ingredients bring you the original taste of the back fat type soup. – Contents: ・Noodles: 100g x2 ・Soup & Seasoning Package: 90g x2 – Features: Founded in June 1938, this ramen shop has been a famous shop in Kichioji area of Tokyo.
So this sounds like a backfat tonkotsu. Sounds interesting – let’s check it out!
Island Hope Kichijoji Hopuken Hompo Backfat Tonkotsu – Japan
Detail of the bottom and side panels (click to enlarge). Contains pork. To prepare, 1. Place noodles in boiling water and cook for 2 to 2½ minutes. (depends on your preference for noodles’ hardness) 2. Put the soup paste in a bowl and add 300cc of hot water. 3. Drain the noodles. Put the noodles into the soup bowl, and add toppings. Finally, enjoy!
One of the two servings of noodles – they seem to be of the fresh variety, however do not require refrigeration.
One of the two soup base sachets. These are really big!
Like I said – a lot of this soup base.
Finished (click to enlarge). Added chashu pork, hard boiled egg, spring onion, sesame seeds, shichimi togarashi and Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts. The noodles are just wonderful. Restaurant quality chew to them and great gauge. The broth is very strong – creamy and full of porkitude. The oiliness is beautiful and taste is rich and giving. Very impressed! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.
