Here’s a classic one from Japan found in a Zenpop box – check out zenpop.jp and use the coupon code RAMENRATER for a discount!
Here’s what they had to say about it – “To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the Red Kitsune Udon, Maruchan organised a popular vote competition to choose a new special edition, and guess who won: the Red Fox Udon, of course. Matched with a Japanese-style soup stock, the ingredients include some tasty shrimp tempura!”
What’s funny is ‘Red Fox’ aka Kitsune Udon is something different – This is Tanuki udon which is named after the raccoon dog. Anyways, let’s check this one out.
Maruchan Akai Tanuki Tempura Udon – Japan
Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains fish and shrimp. To prepare, fill to line with boiling water and sachet contents. Cover for 5 minutes. Finally, stir and enjoy!
Detail of the lid (click to enlarge).
The noodle block.
Loose bits from the bowl.
A dual sachet.
A disc of tempura.
Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion, sesame seed, and shichimi. Liked this one better than I expected. Noodles have a better sturdiness than I remember – not overly soft and well hydrated. The broth is a salty and slightly sweet one, lots of kamaboko etc. The Tempura worked well softened. All in all, very nice. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars JAN bar code 4901990368520.
