Another exotic variety from Indonesia sent kindly by Pher Engi of Australia – thank you yet again! So what’s rica-rica? Wikipedia was nice enough to have some backstory –
Rica-rica (or sometimes simply called rica) is a type of Southeast Asian hot and spicy bumbu (spice mixture) found in Minahasan cuisine and Gorontalo cuisine of Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.[1]
Rica-rica uses much chopped or ground red and green chili peppers, bird’s eye chili, shallots, garlic, ginger, and a pinch of salt and sugar. Such ground spices are cooked in coconut oil and mixed with lime leaf, bruised lemongrass and lime juice.
In Indonesia it is a popular hot and spicy seasoning to prepare barbecued meat, seafood or chicken.[2]
Sounds interesting – and spicy. Let’s kick it up a notch!
Indomie Mi Goreng Rasa Sambal Rica-Rica – Indonesia
Detail of the packaging (click to enlarge). Unsure whether it contains meat – check for yourself. To prepare, boil noodle in 400ml water for 3 minutes. Drain. Add in sachet contents. Finally, stir and enjoy!
The noodle block.
A sachet of sambal.
A sachet of powder base.
Finished (click to enlarge). Added fried egg, spring onion, and crushed red pepper. Noodle is the standard Indomie gauge. The flavor is a kind of sweet and tangy peppery sambal. Now, what I read about rica-rica is that its got a lot of peppers in it. I think the genuine article would be a great deal spicier than this. That being said, it is quite good. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.
