Here’s one that came in a now defunct subscription box. Here’s what they had to say about it – ‘The forbidden fruit, er, no, the forbidden Ramen! “Akan” is Japanese Kansai dialect for “No way!” often used with the subtext of something you shouldn’t do because it’s surprising or a little crazy. The famous Ramen shop “Tenkaippin” cleverly uses this with a wordplay on the word as it also alludes to the color red, which happens to be the color of the stock. As you can likely guess, you’re in for a spicy treat! Its base is chicken, pork and garlic, while it also comes with added spices and toppings.
Another one from this range was on my Top Ten Japanese list – let’s give this one a try!
Sapporo Ichiban Tenka Ippin Akan-Kotteri Kyoto Toripaitan – Japan
Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains chicken and pork. To prepare, add clear sachet contents and boiling water to line. Cover for 4 minutes. Add in remaining sachet contents. Finally, stir and enjoy!
Detail of the lid (click to enlarge).
The noodle block.
A sachet of powder.
A large liquid base sachet.
A sachet of garnish.
A smaller dry base sachet.
Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion, narutomaki, and sesame seed. Noodle is great – good tooth and gauge. The broth was off putting – especially with the little pepper pileup you see there. Very bitter. Really had highj hopes for this one, but as has happened before with little mounds like this, it just screws everything up. Without it would have been much better as this features such a rich and thick broth. Ah well. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars. JAN bar code 4901734052241.
