Found this one at Evergreen Asian Market in Everett, Washington. I found quite a few Vietnamese varieties there I looked up in my archives, found a bowl version of this which was my fifth review. Those early early reviews are definitely out of order, but it was definitely one of the first 30 I tried back in 2002-2003. Well, let’s give this one a try.
Vifon Asian Style Instant Rice Noodles “Phnom Penh” Style – Vietnam
Detail of the packaging (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add everything to a bowl and cover with 400ml boiling water. Cover 3 minutes. Finally, stir and enjoy!
The noodle block.
A sachet of dry soup base.
A sachet of seasoned oil.
Finished (click to enlarge). Added egg, peppers, sesame seed, mung bean sprout, scallion, crushed red pepper, and barbecue pork. The rice noodle came out just right – a nice combination of gauge and chew. The broth is a very comforting oily and tasty combo – with a nice amount of vegetable action. Much better than I’d expected. I will say though there’s a kind of flavor that seems to usually accompany these; maybe it’s MSG but it’s not to my liking. This one doesn’t have it as strongly in the forefront. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 851683004577.
