Lately, South Korea has been pumping out a new breed of instant ramyeon – the MMV (Massive Mukbang Variety) as I have come to call them. These are generally trays with enormous servings, made for a single person to challenge and consume. It seems to me that the need for attention overrides the need for self preservation at this point. I’ll outline why I really don’t think these are really safe for one to eat on their own, and although I will do a mukbang of something spicy, I will never attempt one of these.
Sodium
I got a couple of these on sale yesterday. One of them says it is 1,603 calories per serving; well, it’s 4 servings, so that’s a nudge above 6400mg of sodium. This is really a lot. I think the first thing that would happen if I did do this is is my heart rate would go through the roof, I’d get very sweaty, and I wouold end up with a massive headache. I’m almost 50, so who knows what else would occur. This alone makes me look at these as way too much for me.
Calories
I’ve seen many different variants, but the one I cite above mentions 410 per serving, so just above 1600kCal. That’s a lot as well. Not only that, it’s all carbs. I think this would definitely do a number on my guttyworks and make for quite the sour belly.
Why Do They Make These Things?
Simply put, because there’s a market for them. I don’t personally think there’s anything really wrong with it insofar as I’m not going to ear multiple packs of instant noodles worth of food in one sitting. I do know that there are those that will and enjoy that challenge – more power to them. Lately, I’m seeing these all coming out of South Korea, however I’ve reviewed enormous yakisoba from Japan as well.
Why do I get them?
As always, I’m interested in getting my grubby hands on any and every new instant noodle variety on the markret; call it an obsession; a constant drive to try the new thing. Well, these arer new. The ones I’ve tried so far have been huge, but they’re also honestly quite good. I know there are folks who will want to try them and see if they can challenge the huge quantity of food. I generally warn of health concerns of doing this; worried about high blood pressure? Yeah, skip it. Sodium concerns? Overweight? Nope – not for you. Eating one of these would be a real shock to the system.
In Closing
I have been told if I changed how I do things, I would get more subscribers – on YouTube and elsewhere. The driving force of what I do has been the same since I started over 20 years ago – to try new things and sample new flavors. What kind of bugs people is that I’ve never really cared all that much about how many subscriber I get. I do what I do in the way that I do it. It seems like to gain a higher number from people who randomly click ‘like’ or subscribe, my health is a lot more important. Nothing wrong with those who are obsessed with eyes on them, but I just truly like doing what I do. Definitely not interested in getting sick to gain approval of people I don’t know and never will meet.
